Bequests
A common way to make a gift to endowment is through a provision
in your will. There are several ways to make a bequest to
the Scandinavian Home: With a general bequest, a donor leaves
all or some portion of the estate, specified as a set dollar
amount or a percentage of the estate: “I give and
bequeath the sum of $50,000 for the general uses and purposes
of the Scandinavian Home.” “I give and bequeath
30% of my estate to the Scandinavian Home for its general
uses and purposes.” With a residual bequest, a donor
leaves all or a portion of the estate after other provisions
have been satisfied: “After my primary intentions
set forth above have been satisfied, I give and bequeath
to the Scandinavian Home 30% of the residual (if any remains).
With a contingent bequest, a donor leaves all or a portion
of the estate if for some reason his or her primary intentions
cannot be satisfied: “I give and bequeath to my wife
100% of my estate, or if my wife pre-deceases me, 10% of
the estate to the Scandinavian Home.” With a specific
bequest, a donor leaves a specific item: “I give and
bequeath to the Scandinavian Home my grandfather clock to
be retained or sold for the Home’s general uses and
purposes.”
Cash
The simplest way to help us increase the endowment is for
you to make an outright gift of cash or to pledge over a
three to five year period.
Appreciated
Securities
By donating stocks directly to the Scandinavian Home, you
benefit from a tax deduction for the current value and avoid
capital gains taxes which you would incur if you sold the
stock and donated the proceeds.
Life
Insurance
If you find your survivors no longer need the proceeds from
your life insurance, you may change the beneficiary on an
existing policy to the Scandinavian Home. You may also choose
to purchase a new, term policy and name the Scandinavian
Home as beneficiary.
Life
Income Gifts
You may give cash, securities or property in return for
annual income for you and for others for life, or for a
term of years. There are several ways to structure these
gifts which we will be happy to discuss with you in detail.
Real
Estate
Through an outright gift of property, donors receive a tax
deduction for the appraised value. You may also donate a
personal residence to the Scandinavian Home and continue
to live in it for the rest of your life and the life of
your spouse. You are able to take a charitable deduction
in the year the gift is made.
